Two Sides of Gintautas Gascevičius’ Creative Work at “Baltic Nights”

On 19 August 2026, as the international sculpture creative workshop “Baltic Nights” gathered momentum, an evening with Šiauliai-born drummer, composer, writer and performance artist Gintautas Gascevičius (Ginc) took place in the garden of the P. Bugailiškis Ethnology Centre. The audience was invited to experience two distinct yet complementary sides of his creative work – a conversation about his debut novel “KA ir BA”, published earlier this year, and an original musical performance in which sound, improvisation and the natural acoustics of the surroundings merged into a single artistic experience.

Although the novel “KA ir BA” was published only this year, it has already attracted considerable interest. Combining mysticism, philosophical questions and a narrative filled with recognisable locations in Šiauliai, the book has encouraged readers to search not only for answers within its plot, but also for the deeper meanings hidden within the story. During the event, G. Gascevičius spoke about his creative journey – how literature found its place alongside music, what inspired him to write his first novel, where his stories infused with mystical motifs and philosophical questions come from, and what role imagination plays in the creative process.

The evening’s story did not end when the pages of the book were closed – instead, it continued in the world of sound. Gintautas Gascevičius invited the audience to experience an original musical performance in which rhythm, silence and improvisation formed a distinctive musical narrative. Acoustic instruments, electronics, unexpectedly resonant everyday objects and the garden of the P. Bugailiškis Ethnology Centre itself became integral elements of the work. Each sound functioned not as an isolated element, but as part of a unified artistic experience, inviting the audience not merely to hear, but to truly listen.

Literature and music revealed two different sides of G. Gascevičius’ creative world. The conversation about the novel and the original musical performance complemented the programme of the international sculpture creative workshop “Baltic Nights”, where contemporary art unfolds through a variety of forms – from sculpture to literature, music and improvisation.

The international sculpture creative workshop “Baltic Nights” will continue until 23 August. On Baltic Way Day, at 7 p.m., an exhibition of artworks created throughout the week will open in the garden of the P. Bugailiškis Ethnology Centre, while the project’s closing evening will culminate with a concert of original music by composer Antanas Jasenka.
