Open-Air Exhibition of Artworks Takes Root in the Bugailiškiai Garden

On 23 August 2026, the week-long international sculpture workshop “Baltic Nights” concluded in the historic Bugailiškiai Garden. The workshop brought together artists from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia for a collaborative creative project dedicated to commemorating Baltic Way Day. The culmination of the project was the opening of an exhibition featuring artworks created during the workshop and a concert of original electronic music by composer Antanas Jasenka, bringing visual art and sound together in a single evening. The event marked the symbolic conclusion of a week-long creative process, while its results will continue to live on in the garden of the P. Bugailiškis Ethnology Centre.
Organised by the Šiauliai Cultural Centre. Funded by Šiauliai City Municipality.

Throughout the week, workshop participants Kazys Venclovas and Jonas Vaitkevičius (Lithuania), Roberts Bāliņš (Latvia), Kaarel Kütas and Triinu Jürves (Estonia) created artworks in the garden of the P. Bugailiškis Ethnology Centre dedicated to expressing the idea of the Baltic Way. On the evening of 23 August, visitors saw the completed works for the first time, revealing the artists’ different perspectives on the themes of freedom, unity, memory and togetherness.

During the presentation of the exhibition, philosopher Jurgis Dieliautas invited visitors to view the works not only as art objects, but also as different interpretations of the idea of the Baltic Way. The meeting with the artists offered an opportunity to hear how their ideas emerged, what meanings they sought to convey, and how each of them interpreted the theme of this year’s creative workshop in their own way.

The evening’s artistic narrative continued with a concert of original electronic music by composer Antanas Jasenka. The music, performed in the Gallery “Laiptai”, became the final note of the evening, extending the theme of the creative workshop and its artistic dialogue.

Although the project has come to an end, its creative story continues – some of the artworks created during the international sculpture workshop “Baltic Nights” will become permanent additions to the historic Bugailiškiai Garden. Other works will remain on display in the open-air exhibition for some time, inviting visitors to continue discovering the creations of this year’s project.
