1 October is observed around the world and in Lithuania as the International Day of Older Persons, highlighting respect for seniors, their accumulated life experience and wisdom, and their invaluable contribution to society. World Music Day is celebrated on the same day, encouraging people to enjoy all genres of music, actively make music and draw energy from it.

“On 1 October, we invite Šiauliai seniors to join the vibrant programme of events organised by the city’s cultural institutions and other organisations and to enjoy a wide variety of cultural initiatives which, we hope, will offer warm encounters with like-minded people, pleasant conversations over a hot cup of coffee and musical treats,” says Daina Kinčinaitienė, Head of the Culture Division of Šiauliai City Municipality Administration.

The programme of events dedicated to the International Day of Older Persons and World Music Day at the Šiauliai Cultural Centre will begin on 28 September at 6:00 PM. Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Arts laureate and singing actor Vladas Bagdonas will present his programme of original songs, “Bagdonas Songs”. The organisers are confident that the actor’s hypnotic, deep voice and compelling performances will touch the heart of every listener and leave no one indifferent.

The organisers will also offer theatre lovers several performances. On 29 September at 7:00 PM, the Šiauliai Cultural Centre amateur theatre “Durys” (Artistic Director V. Dargis) will premiere “Steel Magnolias”, based on the play by R. Harling. Audiences will see a story about female friendship, love, motherhood, freedom of choice, loss and the ability to move forward with life.

On 1 October at 11:00 AM, seniors are invited to take part in the Šiauliai Cultural Centre educational workshop “The Art of Light”, during which participants will create a unique candle reflecting their individuality and style. Later, at 2:00 PM, the performance “Flying Travolta” (Director T. Treinys) will be presented on the stage of the State Šiauliai Drama Theatre. Audiences will enjoy a story filled with gentle irony and humour about the effort to live one’s own life rather than a life dictated by circumstances.

The musical programme will also delight residents of the Rėkyva neighbourhood. At 6:00 PM, the Lithuanian music programme “Lithuania – A Lily in the Winds”, performed by Aistė Pilibavičiūtė, will take place at the Šiauliai Cultural Centre Rėkyva Culture House. During the concert for seniors, the performer will offer a warm and emotionally uplifting musical journey featuring classical music, Lithuanian arias and their contemporary arrangements. It will be a cosy encounter with music, inviting audiences to enjoy its beauty and warmth. The programme at the Rėkyva Culture House will continue on 6 October at 11:00 AM with the educational workshop “The Art of Light”. Those wishing to participate are invited to register in advance by email at vaida.dambrauskiene@siauliukc.lt or by phone at +370 678 53 171 – places are limited.

On 3 October at 3:00 PM, audiences will be welcomed to the afternoon of romances “From Heart to Heart” at the Šiauliai Cultural Centre Gallery “Laiptai”. Musical performances will be presented by the Vilnius City Folklore Ensemble “Nalšia” (Director A. Vakarinienė), the duet “Lyra” of the Akmenė District Municipality Cultural Centre (Director I. Popudrenko), and the Šiauliai Cultural Centre Folklore Ensemble “Salduvė” (Artistic Director D. Daknys). Dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Folklore Ensemble “Salduvė”, the concert will offer an opportunity to enjoy wistful, sensitive and melodic romances. Audiences will hear songs about love and separation, longing and motifs of nature.

Seniors are also invited to take part in excursions, concerts, educational activities and other events organised by various institutions. On the festive day, the city’s seniors will also have the opportunity to enjoy free coffee or tea at participating cafés, tearooms and restaurants in Šiauliai. The list of participating venues and the full programme of events dedicated to the International Day of Older Persons and World Music Day are available on the websites of the Šiauliai Cultural Centre and Šiauliai City Municipality.
