For a long time, director Arvydas Lebeliūnas had been nurturing the idea of revealing the clash between two irreconcilable enemies: good and evil, love and the devil. This struggle is vividly expressed in J. Grušas’ tragicomedy “The Devil, Love and Jazz”. This work became not a coincidence, but a conscious inspiration and foundation for the creation of the musical drama “Beatrice”. Here, the nature of passions is revealed—passions that can turn a human into a beast and vice versa.
Through the director’s vision, the audience is drawn into the whirlwind of young people’s lives, ruled by frantic music and the passion of love. An all-controlling system imprisons young people in lies, imposing the norms of Soviet morality. Yet embedded in human nature is a code—to be free, to live! All of this compels resistance against the system of the time, against the morality dictated by parents, even against the love born in one’s heart. However, not everything is blind darkness. What will prevail—love or darkness? The answer lies not only at the end of the play, but also in the heart of every viewer.
