In Šiauliai – Algimantas Aleksandravičius’ Exhibition “In the Years of the Wrathful God. Apocalypse”

On Thursday, March 19, 2026, at 6:00 PM, the Šiauliai Cultural Center gallery “Laiptai” will open the photography exhibition “In the Years of the Wrathful God. Apocalypse” by one of the most prominent and distinctive creators of Lithuanian photography – Algimantas Aleksandravičius. This is not only a new exhibition in the gallery space but also a significant cultural event inviting audiences to meet the author whose work has shaped the face of contemporary Lithuanian photography for more than three decades. The opening will be attended by the author himself, and the exhibition will be presented by art theorist, critic, and photographer Virginijus Kinčinaitis.
Organizer – Šiauliai Cultural Center. The event is free of charge.

Algimantas Aleksandravičius is a laureate of the Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Arts, who has organized more than 100 solo exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad and published numerous photography albums. His works are preserved in museums, art centers, and private collections, and his creative output is considered an inseparable part of the history of contemporary Lithuanian photography.

“In the Years of the Wrathful God. Apocalypse” is a photography cycle in which the apocalypse is perceived not only as a sign of catastrophe or destruction, but also as an inner turning point – a moment of exposure and truth. It is a time when the human face becomes a testimony of history, anxiety, faith, and fragility. In A. Aleksandravičius’ photographs, states of being unfold that contain both personal drama and the pulse of an era – quiet, yet inevitable.

“Algimantas Aleksandravičius’ exhibition is a unique opportunity for the people of Šiauliai to meet an author whose work has already become part of Lithuania’s cultural history. This is photography that not only documents but also reveals, raises questions, and forces us to pause. Such encounters with art help a city and its community grow,” says Deimantė Bačiulė, Director of the Šiauliai Cultural Center.

At the center of the artist’s work is the human being. His portraits are distinguished by exceptional psychological depth and the ability to reveal inner states, character, and life experience through a glance, body posture, and the interplay of light and shadow. It is not a superficial resemblance but a sensitive, sometimes dramatic, sometimes ascetically restrained dialogue between the photographer and the subject. In A. Aleksandravičius’ photographs, people appear almost “constructed” from their biographies – their stories, silences, and lived turning points. The author has portrayed many of the most prominent personalities of culture, art, politics, and society, yet his attention also turns to those whose names do not appear in headlines. Alongside portraits, the artist has created socially sensitive cycles addressing marginal themes, demonstrating his creative versatility, courage, and ability to enter complex and ambiguous spaces.

“We know well photographer Algimantas Aleksandravičius’ loyalty to the genres of classical portrait and Lithuanian landscape. However, in this exhibition he appears completely different. These are flowing images of the subconscious where there is no longer any sentimentality or humanistic ideals. Based on his earlier photographs and experimenting with authorial effects and filters, Algimantas creates a dramatic vision of a world submerged in dark chaos. The cycle was born a few years ago, before the widespread use of artificial intelligence (AI), which may be why these visions are so individual and infernally intense. In any case, Algimantas remains true to himself – changing unexpectedly and exploring new possibilities with maximalist curiosity. Therefore, the passion of his artistic search is always striking and productive,” notes art theorist, critic, and photographer Virginijus Kinčinaitis.

The exhibition “In the Years of the Wrathful God. Apocalypse” is an invitation to pause and look more closely at the human being, at time, and at ourselves. It is a meeting with photography that speaks not loudly but powerfully – through a gaze, silence, and light.

The organizers note that the exhibition will run until April 11, 2026. Visiting the exhibition is paid. Ticket price – 2 EUR. Information about discounts is available at the gallery “Laiptai.”

Opening hours of the Šiauliai Cultural Center gallery “Laiptai”: Tuesday–Friday – 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM, Saturday – 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
