Šiauliai Pulsed with Art: World Art Day Celebrated

On April 15, 2026, the celebration of World Art Day gained momentum in Šiauliai – a day dedicated to the importance of creativity, artistic expression, and cultural dialogue around the world. On this occasion, the initiative “Art in the City” united various cultural and art institutions, creators, and communities. Exhibitions, creative workshops, meetings with artists, discussions, and performances took place across different city spaces, inviting audiences to experience creativity in a live and multifaceted way. The highlight of the evening was the contemporary dance performance “Balcony” presented at the Šiauliai Cultural Center by the contemporary dance group Ulna Contemporary Dance Group, which invited viewers into a sensitive and immersive movement experience. Organizers emphasize that the World Art Day events in Šiauliai are not over yet – they will continue until April 18.

The evening of World Art Day in Šiauliai began with a concert at the Šiauliai Concert Institution Saulė, which gathered a full audience and became a festive opening of the celebration. Violinist Philippe Quint (USA) and the Camerata Solaris Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Vilhelmas Čepinskis, performed on stage. Works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Max Bruch, and Ludwig van Beethoven were performed, while the expressive interpretation and strong musical dialogue united the audience in a shared and inspiring experience.

On Wednesday evening, the Šiauliai Cultural Center was filled with spectators as the contemporary dance group Ulna Contemporary Dance Group presented the performance “Balcony” (director Indrė Puišytė-Šidlauskienė), immersing the audience in a sensitive exploration of movement and space. The performance invited viewers into an engaging and emotional movement experience, revealing the power of the environment surrounding us in shaping human identity and relationships with oneself and others. The creators raised questions about the impact of space on people – why some places make us feel comfortable while others feel unsettling, and how environments can either oppress or liberate us. “Balcony” became a kind of exploration in which the dancer’s body served as a tool for understanding space, while the audience was invited not only to observe, but also to participate – to move, feel, and explore the environment and its influence. In this way, the performance transcended the boundaries of the stage and became a shared experience, allowing everyone to discover their own relationship with space, movement, and other people.

The initiative “Art in the City” also brought together various cultural and art institutions of the city, including the Šiauliai County Povilas Višinskis Public Library, Šiauliai Art Gallery, Šiauliai Tourism Information Center, Šiauliai Arts School, the Lithuanian Artists’ Association Šiauliai Branch, artist communities, and other partners. They invited visitors to exhibition openings, creative workshops, meetings with artists, discussions, performances, and educational activities held in various city spaces – from galleries and libraries to unconventional venues. Once again, this demonstrated that creativity in Šiauliai is vibrant, diverse, and unifying.

The World Art Day events in Šiauliai continue beyond April 15. On April 17, the Rėkyva Cultural House will host the improvisational music performance “Triominoes”, while the “Laiptai” gallery of the Šiauliai Cultural Center will open Audronė Petrašiūnaitė’s personal exhibition “Singular of Two”.

On April 18, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., visitors are invited to explore exhibitions and the Peliksas Bugailiškis Ethnographic Center of the Šiauliai Cultural Center free of charge, as well as participate in educational activities and guided tours.

World Art Day in Šiauliai once again confirmed that creativity can unite a city, encourage dialogue, and open new forms of experience for everyone.
