Sigitas Parulskis Presented His Latest Books at the “Laiptai” Gallery

Sigitas Parulskis entered the field of Lithuanian literature in 1990 with the publication of his first poetry book “All This Out of Longing”. For this debut, he received the Zigmas Gėlė Literary Prize, followed later by other important awards, including the Jotvingiai Prize and the St. Christopher Award.
To this day, S. Parulskis remains one of the most popular authors in contemporary Lithuanian literature. He regularly meets with readers, most often after the release of a new work. This was not his first visit to the Šiauliai Cultural Center Gallery Laiptai – in May 2018, he presented his essay collection “Eternity Does Not Concern Me” there. Just as then, this time the gallery hall was filled to capacity, and visitors listened with great interest to the author’s stories.
At the center of the evening was the author’s latest work. The poetry book “A Spider Between Your Lips” has already been described by literary critics as an example of high creative mastery. The collection reveals the sharp and often ironic взгляд of the author toward human states, relationships, and inner tensions.
“I have had many book presentations in my life, but I always face the same problem – how to explain in a short time something that was written over several years. If it were possible to explain everything in 40 minutes, perhaps there would be no need to spend so many years writing,” reflected the author.
In the prose work “The Most Beautiful Dreams About the Road”, the author invites readers on an inner journey, reflecting on suffering, its causes, and the search for ways to overcome it. The book intertwines life experiences, reflections, and existential questions.
“There are quite a few short texts in this book. There are also texts whose humor people did not understand – for example, the chapter ‘Tarantino Chronicles’, which ironically describes fragments of everyday life during quarantine. There are texts about photography as well, and even photographs themselves. I do not draw a clear line between essays and fiction, or between a short story and a novella – for me, that distinction is not really important,” said Sigitas Parulskis.
During the event, the writer also introduced readers to his newest poems, which had not yet been published anywhere, and shared thoughts about the origins of creativity and the influence of everyday life: “How are texts born? Very simply – from walks, conversations, moments of everyday life. Sometimes you go out looking for a photograph and come back with a poem.”
