The City Through the Eyes of Andrius Lamauskas: “Urbo Grafija”

On Thursday, May 14, 2026, at 6 p.m., the personal photography exhibition “Urbo Grafija” by photographer Andrius Lamauskas will open at the Šiauliai Cultural Center Gallery Laiptai. The exhibition presents works created in various European cities – London, Paris, and Rome – while consciously avoiding specific references to time and place. Viewers are invited to experience the city intuitively through light, shadow, movement, and silence. The exhibition will be introduced by art theorist, critic, and photographer Virginijus Kinčinaitis.

Organizer – Šiauliai Cultural Center. Admission is free.

Andrius Lamauskas is an artist and photographer born in Šiauliai, a laureate of international competitions, participant in exhibitions since 1988, and one of the founders of the association Fotografijos Namai. The core of his creative work is street photography, where the most important elements are not technology, but the awaited moment, composition, interplay of light and shadow, and the human presence within the city. The artist is distinguished by his sensitive approach to portraiture – in his works, the human being becomes the central focus of the narrative, while urban space acts both as its background and an equal participant.

“Urbo Grafija” is the first personal exhibition by Andrius Lamauskas at the Šiauliai Cultural Center Gallery Laiptai, although visitors to the Šiauliai Cultural Center are already familiar with his works from exhibitions organized together with Fotografijos Namai. Earlier this year, in January, “Urbo Grafija” was presented at the Šiauliai District Municipality Cultural Center, where it received significant public attention and positive evaluations. Now, both the residents and visitors of Šiauliai are invited to experience it.

The title “Urbo Grafija” literally means a city map, yet the exhibition rejects the concept of a map. Instead, it invites visitors to wander without clear landmarks, relying on intuition and the language of imagery. According to the exhibition curator Kornelijus Užuotas, the artist allows viewers to immerse themselves in the rhythm of the city, where light and shadow, calm and chaos merge together, inviting them to experience the city as a constantly changing and living whole.

“I capture the city as it is – alive and changing every second. For me, street photography is a way of freezing a moment that passes faster than we can fully comprehend it. In my photographs, the human being is inseparable from the city – people give space life, rhythm, and emotion. Without people, the city becomes merely architecture, form, or background, while their presence allows us to feel the true pulse of the city. What interests me on the street is not only the passerby, but also their relationship with the environment – how they move, wait, observe, hurry, or pause for a moment within the city’s flow. Through the human figure, the city becomes personal – every gesture, glance, or silhouette opens up a small and unique story,” says Andrius Lamauskas.

This exhibition is not only a visual journey through different European cities, but also a universal human experience within the urban environment. In the photographs of Andrius Lamauskas, the city becomes not a geographical location, but a state of being – a space where fragments of everyday life, relationships, inner silence, and the pace of movement are revealed. Here, viewers search less for recognizable places and instead listen to the mood created by the images, discovering their own relationship with the city.

The exhibition will run until June 6. Admission is paid. Ticket price – €2. Information about discounts is available at the “Laiptai” gallery. Opening hours of the Šiauliai Cultural Center Gallery Laiptai: Tuesday–Friday – 11 a.m.–6 p.m., Saturday – 11 a.m.–5 p.m.
