Peliksas Bugailiškis House Featured in European Museum Night

On Saturday, May 23, 2026, Šiauliai hosted events as part of the international project European Museum Night, dedicated to celebrating International Museum Day. For the first time, the Šiauliai Cultural Center joined the project, opening the doors of the Peliksas Bugailiškis House to visitors.

The Peliksas Bugailiškis House (Žemaitės St. 83) is a two-storey brick building constructed in the 1920s. It is believed that Peliksas and Ona Bugailiškis lived there from 1928 to 1945. The house was later nationalized, and during the Soviet era it housed various educational institutions. Today, the building has been reconstructed while preserving its original layout and several authentic interior details.

Through the exhibition presented in the house, visitors had the opportunity to learn about the life and work of Peliksas Bugailiškis (1883–1965) – a lawyer, public figure, local historian, and advocate of museum development. Guests were also able to experience the authentic environment where cultural initiatives and ideas of a free Lithuania once took shape. Stories about one of the most prominent and civically engaged figures of the Šiauliai region were shared by museum specialist Virginija Šiukščienė.

During European Museum Night, 23 museums and institutions across Šiauliai opened their doors, offering educational activities, exhibitions, performances, guided tours, film screenings, and live storytelling events. Initiated by the Šiauliai Aušra Museum, the event continues to grow every year, and this year featured a record number of participating partners.
